The Common Spaces That Shape Our Identities

In this blog students will discuss how various common spaces we live in (i.e., the laundromat on our street where we do laundry, the community garden down the block where my mother plants tomatoes, the grocery store where I go to buy Red-Hot Cheetos, the basketball court in our neighborhood park, etc.) shape our identities.

What's most signifacant to me is my neigborhood South Commons.I enjoy playing basketball at Dunbar, cyling, and even going swimming in the summer.I also like playing tennis with my grandmother on the weekends. Another thing that is fascinating is the scenary such as the flowers, trees, and well cut grass.

Robert, your grandmother plays tennis? How old is she? I'd like to hear more about the scenery.

Terone, can you describe what the sermon and congregation is like on Sundays? Can you also describe more about your class on Tuesdays?

Brianna, when you go inside One-Stop, what do you hear? What sounds? What do people talk about?

Pierre, I have many questions about the Darehomes. Feel free to describe the daily activities there.

Class of 2010 (who are you?), describe how Walmart is different than other stores. Describe how people act when in Walmart.

Jerome, it's interesting how you suggest we assume an identity that other people give us. Now, describe a place of significance in your community. Choose a common space.

hi my name is ernest bunch from phillips h.s. i recently visited western illinois university with my fellow students and,I witness the most "outstanding" library i have ever seen in my life. as i walked into the building there is this 20 foot high ceiling with plaster birds hoovering above us. they also had the most beutiful flowers and ezotic plants hang from the walls and stairs as the stairs spiral thru the center of the building which extended six stories. there is a floor for a study hall where students get work done, theres a floor for educational videos and also a floor for just magazines or just fun books to read.that was the most sensational feeling as i walked inside because it makes u feel like you are out in the forest because of the different types of palnts and animals all around you, but at the same time your comfortable because its still a library.

Tevin, now I want you to find time over the weekend to go to Chicago State University again, sit down somewhere, and observe what happens. From your observations we can get more on the "mood" of this place. Perhaps you can also describe how CSU is a significant place for the South Side community.

Briana, that's interesting that you hear people fighting (arguing?) about how much the food costs. Do they argue with the clerks? Is it generally a negative atmosphere in there? Do people just come and go, or do they stay for awhile?

Deonte, it's interesting that you mention how the Sox stadium has a lot of banners. Can you describe these banners? Have you been to both stadiums? What else is different about them?

Pierre, sounds like fathers at the Wells were quite involved in arranging social events, as you say, picnics. Did you ever go to a picnic there on the 4th of July or on Father's Day? Can you describe what this picnic was like, who was there, what they were doing, what people talked about, etc...

Ernest, this is a great account so far. Good start. How about describing what you did there when you visited this library. Can you describe what other people were doing? Perhaps you can further describe how this library is different than others you've been in.

Jerome, the AMC theater sounds like a pleasant place. What kind of food can one eat there? What movies show there? How is this theater different than others you've been to? What is it like going inside? The outside areas?

On sundays at church we start off by praying then after that we sing.So After the singing our Prophet comes in to march threw the middle of the floor with his wife.Den he would go up to the mike and the people of the church have to march, we all wear black robes every sunday also on tuesday.when we done marching they would start back singing then the prophet would bring a message from the bible. He would preach to us for a long period of time and somtimes i would take down the message that he brings. On tuesdays the prophet wife teaches class to the student of the church of our church New Heaven Coptic Temple. The first lady of the church she teaches us about our god and ourself and also the students would pray. After that she would call someone up to give a word or explain one of the points that we have. Some of the points are loyal, faith, love, kind, peach,or courage. So this is what Ne Heaven Coptic Temple does in the church.

Well my grandmother is 57 years old. Besides the grass, trees, and flowers the scenary also consist of a huge parking lot in the front as well as the back of the building. There's also trim bushes with some red berries, next to that is a big water fountain with a few benches that surrounds it to enjoy the view. Including a grammar school which has a playground for the children to play on.
