Journalism students! Search the news sites to find an interesting quotation, spoken from a person with inside knowledge, about a news-worthy event. For example:
“A vast ecosystem is being exposed to contaminants right now, and nobody’s watching it,” Mr. Steiner (a scientist) said. “That seems to me like a catastrophic failure on the part of NOAA.” (the NOAA is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the quote was taken from The New York Times on 5/19/10)
So, I think this quotation is important because it's accusing the government department in charge of managing oil spills and coordinating the clean up of not reacting as they should have to the oil spill.
So, students, (1) find an interesting quotation from a news-source, (2) copy it and paste it on this blog, (3) give the name of the news source that you found it from, (4) and write a comment about why this quotation is significant.

Friday, May 14 News
Well, the well is still gushing oil into the Gulf of Mexico, but now the big news is that scientists are estimating the leak to be something like 5 times the amount as previously thought. British Petroleum and our U.S. government thought the leak to be at 200,000 gallons a day. Now scientists who have studied the leak through the video of the leak that is now available (through a robotic device that submerged to the bottom of the sea floor at 5,000 feet below sea level) have said that this amount is gravely underestimated. The amount could very well be 1,000,000 gallons a day.
If this is true, this oil spill could be the worst in history. It could effect 100 of miles of coastline, from Louisiana to Florida and even up the Atlantic coast.
As I was reading this news last night, I became quite sad. I hope our government starts to really invest in renewable sources of energy.
Do you think our government will invest in renewable sources of energy, like wind and solar power? When will we move away from using oil to run our cars and machines?

Once again we are here to blog about current news.
My topic: Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico
You might have heard that over the weekend the oil company BP and others worked on containing the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. They succeeded in dropping a containment structure over the leak at the bottom of the seafloor (5,000 feet below sea level), but there was a problem with the freezing temperatures down there so they had to take the containment structure off. Unfortunately, that means that the oil leak continues to spew some 200,000 gallons of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico.
How much longer do you think it will take before they contain the leak?
